“

I was on a Europe tour in 2008, and we were in Berlin for a Universal Records ‘buzz artists’ event. It was basically a huge circle jerk of label types shaking hands and watching three bands perform. The first band was the hottest of the three at the time (Flobots, with the song ‘Handlebars’), and they got up on stage and did their thing and everyone clapped. The second band (Curli) got up, and she did her thing.
The third act was led by a girl in the most bullshit outfit ever (8 inch heels, a leotard, ass-less chaps, and a septor with a skull)…she gets up there, presses play on a boombox, and does a dance&song routine onstage. Everyone was just sort of frozen because the act totally didn’t translate. She stops the music halfway through her second song, and delivers the following (only slightly paraphrased) speech:
“I want you all to know that I am the future. I am the one and only. When I get off my private jet, they are going to tell me I’m number 1. When you look into my eyes, you can see murder, because I will kill for this record. I am going to be the greatest, brightest star in the pop universe. My name is Lady Gaga.”

This was 4 months before “The Fame” dropped.
